JEWISH BOXERS
The Jewish Boxers exhibit didn't need much advertising, being that it was an amazing subject matter, story and that the oil paintings on linen were museum quality work by Brooklyn based artist, Charles Miller. We got lots of attention including coverage in The New Yorker, good reviews in several newspapers and ended the exhibit with Madonna buying one of the most beautiful paintings in the show for her husband, Guy Ritchie. That said, at some point we thought, why not? We are an ad agency after all, why not do a few small space ads in The New York Sun, which is known for it's Arts + Letters section. Everything was going well after the first three ads ran--a couple people actually walked in with the newspaper folded to the ads and were happy to know about the show which was, in a word, sweet. One guy actually bought a piece after coming in with the ad, so there was that. But the last ad, got the newspaper up in arms. We thought it was pointed and funny, in context. They called it inappropriate, anti-semitic, in poor taste. This, from the publisher of a NYC daily, a professional defender of the First Amendment. Hmmm. Although the subject matter was boxing we weren't looking for a fight. So, we let it go, eventually. You can decide what you think on your own. Feel free to tell us, but please note, we're still not looking for a fight. No mas.
